Our top 5 social media tips to help your small business succeed!

It seems that across social media these days, all I hear about is ‘Facebook Ads’.  It’s becoming a reality that yes, Facebook Ads are VERY important in creating a well-rounded marketing strategy for business but equally important, is having a strong organic strategy too!  So, how does one create said organic strategy?  Here are my top tips:

  1. GET COMFORTABLE IN FRONT OF A VIDEO CAMERA!  I read an article the other day that indicated that within the next couple of years, Facebook will predominantly be a video platform.  At the moment we see video and Facebook Live get a lot more reach than images…this is only going to become more prevalent.  You don’t need to be a professional video editor to create something amazing.  There are some pretty cool video apps out there these days that will allow you to add effects and text to a simple video you take on your smart phone.
  2. KNOW YOUR TARGET MARKET: I cannot stress the importance of this point enough!  Without having an in-depth understanding of your target market, you don’t know how to post relevant content!  They will only stop and engage with your post if it catches their eye.  In the training package we offer, we go through a customer avatar activity that takes a thorough look at your ideal customer and this really helps you when trying to think of targeted, relevant and engaging content.
  3. CROSS PLATFORM MARKETING IS ESSENTIAL:  We live in a digital age and as such, digital marketing has become extremely important.  Small businesses think that as long as they have a Facebook Page, that’s enough.  The reality, it certainly isn’t enough.  I encourage my clients to try have presence on more than 1 digital marketing platform.  This links to the point I made about knowing your target market – research what they use!  Is it Instagram? Do they prefer receiving emails? If you’re business to business perhaps LinkedIn is an option.  Make yourself known on more than 1 platform.
  4. POST REGULAR, RELEVANT CONTENT:  You need strategies that will continually engage your audience so posting content regularly is really important.  I talk to so many people who post ‘when they remember’ and working to a strategy like this, will not work.  Organic reach these days is at around 2% so you need to be posting often and you need to posting content that is engaging and relevant. The more shares, likes and comments you receive, the more reach your posts will receive.   Again, this brings me back to the point I make about understanding your target market.  The most common reason people ‘unlike’ a page is because their posts are uninteresting.  Be engaging!!!
  5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY:  Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your social media following. You need to be patient, you need to try new things, experiment and see what works for you.  Whatever you try, ensure you be consistent in your brand message.  Make sure your logo is on everything you post, make sure you’re using the same font, same theme or the same colours to help build that brand awareness.
